Specialize in Humane Education

Saybrook University’s PhD specialization in Humane Education is the result of a partnership with the Institute For Humane Education (IHE) and Valparaiso University. IHE students who enroll can complete their PhD in Organizational Systems while pursuing their passion for creating transformational change in educational settings. This program, which emphasizes organizational management within educational systems at all levels, recognizes the unique organizational culture of educational institutions and teaches you to work from within to create positive change.

If you see yourself as a transformational leader and change agent within the challenging educational environment, Saybrook is for you. We seek students who wish to create long-lasting social, economic, political, and structural change by building global relevance and a systems-oriented approach into their work and educational outreach. They are passionate about the role of education in the 21st century and want to contribute to the collective conversation that asks the questions:

“What is the very purpose of education?"

“How can we create educational institutions and approaches to teaching and learning that fulfill that purpose?”

The Institute for Humane Education (IHE) has created and delivered Humane Education programs since 1996 to thousands of people through lectures, workshops, online courses, and certificate programs. Since 2000 IHE offered the only master’s degree program in Humane Education in the United States, and affiliated with Valparaiso University in 2011. Humane Education is a unified course of study that looks at the connections between four areas of social justice: environmental ethics, animal protection, human rights, and cultural change-making, all through the lens of education. Humane educators apply principles of creative and critical thinking, civic engagement, and informed decision-making across disciplines, at all levels of education.
