A comprehensive introduction to mind-body medicine, this Certificate is a 16-credit program, including five courses, three or four residential conferences, and a capstone integrative essay. The first three courses are required for all students seeking the Certificate in Mind-Body Medicine.

Curriculum

  • Mind-Body Medicine - An Overview: This course begins with the Center Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) initial mind-body medicine training, introducing the student to a specific model for imparting mind-body skills in a group process format. The training takes place in conjunction with the School of Mind-Body Medicine Residential Conference. Students continue with eight weeks of online learning, reading and research on mind-body medicine, and supervised practice with volunteers.
  •
  • Advanced Mind-Body Medicine: This course includes the Center for Mind-Body Medicine advanced training, providing students with experience conducting mind-body skills groups. The location for this training varies, but students will learn together with other health professionals from throughout the world. Students continue with eight weeks of online learning, reading and academic research on integrative healing paradigms, and supervised practice with volunteers.
  • Mind-Body Skills Groups Supervision: Following completion of the two mind-body medicine courses, participants will complete a three-credit supervision course. Participants will organize small groups as avenues for teaching mind-body skills in their home communities, with patients, volunteers, and colleagues. The Center for Mind-Body Medicine provides supervisors for the students, who provide weekly group-based telephone supervision for the running of mind-body skills groups. This is the key paradigm of the Certificate – teaching basic mind-body skills in a group process setting.
  •
  • It is best to complete these three courses during one academic year, for better continuity with a cohort of Saybrook students.
  •
  • The remaining six credits include any two of the School of MBM core skill-set courses, such as coaching for health and wellness, imagery for health, clinical hypnosis, biofeedback, or psychotherapy for health. The two skill-set courses require residential components, as well as directed readings, a research paper, online discussion, and supervised practice of skills with volunteers. The schedule depends on the choice of courses.
  •
  • The sixteenth credit is a one-credit Graduate Colloquium course, continuing through the entire time the student is in the Certificate program. The student is assigned a mentor, who conducts the Graduate Colloquium and provides academic guidance and support. To enroll in this program, go to Apply Online and select your desired Non-Degree choice.

  • School of Mind-Body Medicine students already take a two-credit Graduate Colloquium and have an assigned mentor. They will not need to take this additional one-credit Graduate Colloquium. If you are a current student in the School of Mind-Body Medicine or in another Saybrook degree program, talk with your faculty mentor about enrolling for this certificate.
