Alumni Association Charter & By-Laws

ARTICLE I
NAME
Saybrook Alumni Association of Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center.

ARTICLE II
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Alumni Association shall be to enrich the lives of alumni, to engage them in Saybrook's community and future, and to support their active interest and involvement in a system of life-long education

ARTICLE III
CORE VALUES OF SAYBROOK GRADUATE SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
  1. Advocacy: We strive to enhance the quality and stature of Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center. We encourage volunteer service to, and financial support of, Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center.
  2. Community: We engage with Saybrook's faculty, staff, students, and friends to create and promote relationships within the Saybrook community and to build connections with the community at large.
  3. Education: We believe in life-long learning and support Saybrook's mission to provide learning opportunities to adults who seek to grow and realize their potential. We are dedicated to the support and development of students, and to the enterprise of individual learning.
  4. Diversity: We value and support diversity among Saybrook constituents.
  5. Innovation: We are committed to Saybrook's search for excellence at the edge and we seek to promote quality in our educational endeavors. We strive to identify and create new opportunities for growth and meaning within the Saybrook community.

ARTICLE IV
GOALS
  1. To promote the principles of Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center among alumni, within the Saybrook community, and to the larger community.
  2. To promote the participation of alumni in a system of education and professional development.
  3. To promote the professional objectives and interests of the members of the association.
  4. To build mutually beneficial relationships between alumni of Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center and its administration, faculty, and students.

ARTICLE V
GOVERNANCE
SECTION 1. ALUMNI COUNCIL The Alumni Association shall have an Alumni Council as its governing body, working in cooperation with the Director of Alumni Affairs, and operating subject to the authority of the President and the Board of Trustees of Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center. The Council shall consist of no less than 8 and no more than 12 members.
SECTION 2. TERM OF OFFICE The Council members shall serve for a period of two years. A council member may serve for up to three consecutive terms. Half the Council shall be selected each year.
SECTION 3. NOMINATIONS Council members shall be selected by nominations from the membership of the Association, and approved by the membership at the annual meeting.
SECTION 4. OFFICERS The Alumni Council shall elect a Chairperson and a Secretary to serve for a period of one year. An officer may succeed himself/herself.

ARTICLE VI
DUTIES OF ALUMNI COUNCIL
  1. Coordinate the activities of the Alumni Association.
  2. Appoint such committees as are necessary to carry out the mission of the Alumni Association.
  3. Plan and coordinate the membership program of the Alumni Association.
  4. Plan and coordinate the benefits program of the Alumni Association.
  5. Elect a Chairperson to oversee the business of the Alumni Association, working closely with the Director of Alumni Affairs.
  6. Elect a secretary to maintain an accurate record of alumni association meetings.
  7. Members of the Alumni Council are expected to observe and comply with all applicable policies and procedures identified in writing of Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center.

ARTICLE VII
MEETINGS
SECTION 1. REGULAR MEETINGS. The Saybrook Alumni Association shall meet annually at the June Residential Conference of Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center.
SECTION 2. CONFERENCE CALL MEETINGS. The Alumni Council shall hold monthly conference calls to conduct the business of the association.
SECTION 3. QUORUM. The vote of two-thirds of the members of the Council shall be necessary to approve any changes in programs or benefits of the Alumni Association.

ARTICLE VIII
MEMBERSHIP & DUES
  1. Membership in the Saybrook Alumni Association shall be granted to all individuals who have received a Certificate, Master's Degree, Doctor of Philosophy Degree, or Doctor of Humane Letters from Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center.
  2. Former Saybrook students who have not completed a degree are considered "Friends of the Association."
  3. The Alumni Council may set dues for the membership.
  4. The Alumni Association shall give one year's free membership to each new graduate.

ARTICLE IX
LIAISON WITH THE SAYBROOK BOARD OF TRUSTEES
  1. The Chairperson of the Alumni Council shall have a standing invitation to attend meetings of the Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center Board of Trustees.
  2. Any alumnus who is serving on the Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center Board of Trustees shall be invited to serve on the Alumni Council.

ARTICLE X
AMENDMENTS
SECTION 1. RATIFICATION These by-laws shall become effective upon acceptance by a two-thirds vote of the members of the Alumni Council and shall be operative pending a resolution of approval by the Saybrook Board of Trustees.
SECTION 1. AMENDMENTS. These by-laws may be amended by approval thereof of two-thirds of the members of the Alumni Council.
