Transformative Social Change Degree Program: Determining Prospective Student Interest
Saybrook University is considering development of a new M.A. and Ph.D. degree program in Transformative Social Change. We live in a time of transformative social change. All over the world, people are working for a more sustainable environment, seeking democratic reform, creating new economic models that work for the many and not just the few, and striving for social justice. These movements are aligned with Saybrook University’s founding mission of seeking a more humane, just, and sustainable world. Many of these changes are powered by new communication technologies that are making a powerful impact, from spreading innovation to toppling repressive regimes.
Building from Saybrook’s current Transformative Social Change Specialization area, the new degree program in Transformative Social Change would prepare students to respond to current social, cultural, and political challenges of our times in a unique way, as reflective scholar-activists able to create transformative changes in society and guided by humanistic values.
The program in Transformative Social Change would include options of a Specialization in Communication Technology and Social Change, and a Specialization in Peace and Justice Studies. Students participating in the program would also be able to enroll in existing Certificate Programs sponsored by Transformative Social Change, including Community Health and Development, Peace and Conflict Resolution, Building a Sustainable World, and Socially Engaged Spirituality.

The program as presently envisioned would be specifically geared for activists wishing to work in nonprofit/nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), government agencies, and in the education sector. It would serve young people beginning their careers in these areas, mid-career individuals interested in changing to a more socially engaged vocation, and seniors looking for opportunities to give back to society.
Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Saybrook University is a private, non-profit institution that offers graduate degrees in a number of areas.
