64-day human rights awareness campaign launched for 64th anniversary of Universal Declaration

The US Network for Human Rights (USHRN) is launching the 64 Day Campaignto raise awareness of domestic human rights issues starting 64 days before international human rights day. Each day, from October 8th leading up to December 10th, they will highlight the mission and work of 64 member and partner organizations that work tirelessly to defend human rights. The campaign will feature local, regional and national organizations and groups working on gender, racial justice, sexuality, indigenous, immigrant, and economic rights, among others.

In the U.S. we think of the Bill of Rights, civil rights, even the right to remain silent.  But do we consider the right to rest, to an education, to a safety net, to be free from persecution? These are just some of our universal human rights; rights that every human being can claim under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), and adopted by the United Nations in 1948. Every December 10th, otherwise known as international Human Rights Day, we reaffirm and celebrate these and other economic, social, cultural, political and civil rights. 2012 marks the 64th anniversary of the UDHR.

The USHRN is asking for help to get the message out across the country. Anyone can follow and share the “64 Day Campaign” features on FacebookTwitter, and through the mailing list. The USHRN hopes is that people will support these organizations by promoting their work, donating to their cause, and/or joining their fight—they are, after all, working for all of our human rights.

In promoting the 64 Day Campaign, you will also be supporting the USHRN in its work to build and strengthen a people-centered human rights movement, where leadership is centered on those most directly affected by human rights violations, and the full range of diversity within communities is respected and embraced.

This is great. Thanks for sharing. I am also involved with a group I co-founded TunzaUbuntu that is in the process of  planning to facilitate an initiative that will reach out to several institutions and organizations here in Kenya and hopefully in other parts of Africa to create awareness and celebrate the International Human Rights day on Dec. 10th by dedicating one hour to read out a loud a shortened version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and have a conversation about what Shulamith Koenig, President of "The People's Movement for Human Rights Learning" and our partner in the work of human rights learning refers to as "The 30 Points of of Dignity". Peace!
