Requirements

The admissions criteria for PsyD applicants who possess bachelor’s degree only include:

  1. Submission of the online application, found at https://mars.saybrook.edu/SMS/MainAdmissionsLogin.jsp .
  2. Application fee (see fee schedule below). 
  3. Official (sealed) transcripts showing a bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited university with a GPA of 3.0 or better.
  4. A personal purpose statement that includes previous experience with psychological research, teaching, or delivery of psychological services.
  5. Graduate Record Examination (GRE). If GRE scores are below 500 in each of the three parts of verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills, other evidence of academic promise in the applicant’s history must be provided. The GRE Exam is not required for PsyD applicants who hold a master’s degree in psychology or a related field from an accredited institution. 
  6. Saybrook will administer an online Interpersonal Communication Style Survey. More details on this survey are available from the Admissions Office.
  7. The ETS Major Field Test may be required for admitted students whose bachelor’s or master’s degree is not in psychology.
  8. Two letters of recommendation. Saybrook reserves the right to request additional letters of support/recommendation.
  9. A comprehensive resume or curriculum vitae.

Additional Admission criteria for PsyD applicants with a master’s in psychology or related discipline:

  1. Candidates for admission to the PsyD program who possess degrees and professional experience in psychology, human services, or related fields may transfer a maximum of 21 semester units of equivalent graduate coursework into the PsyD. To be considered for advanced placement in the PsyD program, applicants should submit the following:
  2. An official (sealed) transcript documenting completion, with a grade of B or better (if ungraded, then credit of “CR” with no marginal ratings) of postgraduate work.
  3. Completion of all the requirements in the bachelor’s degree admissions criteria.

Additional admission criteria for PsyD applicants with limited educational background in psychology:

  1. Students who have had no or limited formal psychology courses at the undergraduate or graduate level may be considered for the College’s PsyD program, but will be expected to demonstrate strong academic promise. They will be interviewed by psychology faculty for a thorough assessment of their background and preparation for understanding core psychological concepts.
  2. The ETS Major Field Test may be required for admitted students who hold a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree not in psychology.

PsyD Enrollment Criteria

  1. Students accepted into Saybrook's PsyD program must fulfill the following research and statistics requirements:

Completion of an undergraduate or graduate course in statistics with a grade of B or better or completion of the PsyD online Statistics tutorial at the required level of mastery to satisfy the prerequisites for PsyD courses. This requirement must be satisfied by the end of the first year of study and prior to enrollment in courses with this prerequisite.

Completion of an undergraduate or graduate course in research methods with a grade of B or better or completion of the PsyD online Research Methods tutorial at the required level of mastery to satisfy the prerequisites for PsyD courses. This requirement must be satisfied by the end of the first year of study and prior to enrollment in courses with this prerequisite.
