Counseling & Leadership Programs in Seattle
Saybrook’s Seattle campus offers two masters-level graduate programs: Counseling through the School of Clinical Psychology and Leadership & Organization Development through the School of Organizational Leadership & Transformation. Both have a higher component of face-to-face learning than other Saybrook programs.
The Seattle program confers the following degrees:
- MA Psychology, with a specialization in Counseling – a degree focused on systems counseling and family therapy. The counseling program prepares you for licensure in the State of Washington (Mental Health Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist), the State of Oregon (Licensed Professional Counselor), or the State of California (Licensed Professional Counselor). For compatibility with requirements elsewhere, please consult with our faculty.
- MA Organizational Systems, with a specialization in Leadership and Organization Development (LOD) – a degree combining systems thinking (managing processes) with leadership psychology (leading people). This program prepares you for a career as a manager, consultant, trainer, or executive coach. The LOD program is compatible with International Coach Federation requirements at the Associate Certified Coach level or the Society of Manufacturing Engineers' Bronze-level, Lean credential.
Experiential Learning at Its Best
Face-to-face residential learning, which is an integral component of both programs, occurs in a series of residential conferences throughout the year. Onsite activities are supplemented with online learning, discussion, and teamwork. Students learn to work together in teams in both educational and practical settings. The faculty-to-student ratio is kept deliberately low: 1:15 in the first year,1:8 in the second. The resulting community of learners engenders a unique learning experience that has produced skilled professionals dating back to the program's origin as the Leadership Institute of Seattle (LIOS) more than 40 years ago.

As a student in the LIOS Leadership and Organization Development program, Jeff McAuliffe’s intention was to learn how to work with the human side of organizations. He was able to make a career shift and accepted a job at Boeing after graduation. “I worked at Boeing for 10 years. Boeing was amazing; it was like a candy story with so many different projects and opportunities in Organization Development. I was quickly recognized as being an effective consultant because of the skills I learned at LIOS,” explains Jeff. Since then he’s consulted for companies ranging from the Swedish Medical Center to Toyota, and now has an external consulting practice with a focus on the healthcare industry. He's also a faculty member at LIOS, where he helps others develop the skills he used to succeed.
