Financial Aid: Federal Eligibility
|
Saybrook Assistance Requirements
Academic Standing
Before any federal financial aid, including student loan funds
already certified, can be disbursed to you, the Financial Aid Office must be
able to determine that you in good academic standing as determined by the
minimum standards of academic progress published in the
Saybrook Catalog.
If the Financial Aid Office is unable to make a determination that you are in good
academic standing because course completions for the prior term have not been
reported, then all funds will be held until a determination of good standing can be made.
In addition, if you have failed to meet any of the conditions of a prior
Academic Warning, you are considered to be on Academic Probation and
ineligible for aid until the required units are completed and posted to your
student record. Funds received for students on academic probation will be
returned to the lender. Funds can be recovered provided good standing is
restored prior to the end of the loan period.
Academic Probation
If you are on Academic Probation or a determination of good standing cannot
be made due to missing course completions, you will be responsible to making
alternative arrangements for the payment of tuition with the Saybrook
Business Office until the minimum number of required units are posted to
your student record, good standing is restored and your loan disbursement is
approved. To avoid this possibility, please be sure that all course work is
completed and all course completions submitted to the Registrar by the
published due dates in the academic calendar.
Exception Request
An exception to these policies may be requested by sending a written
explanation of extenuating circumstances and a proposed calendar for
resolution of any deficiencies to J.T. Brown, Registrar
for presentation to the Academic Review Committee.
Time Frame
In addition, the federal government requires all schools to have a concept
of a maximum time frame for degree completion as part of the policy of
minimal academic progress. Saybrook allows at a maximum 4 years for
completion of the MA, 7 years for completion of the PhD and 8 years for
students continuing from a Saybrook MA to a Saybrook PhD. Periods of leave
or inactivity may be considered as extenuating circumstances but do not
automatically extend the time allowed for completion. Eligibility for
financial aid is limited to these time frames. Students who need more time
request an extension by send a written explanation of extenuating
circumstances together with a calendar of the remaining steps required to
graduate to the Andrew Hagedorn Director of Financial Aid at
ahagedorn@saybrook.edu for presentation to the Academic Review Committee.
