Students may substitute one January conference during their academic career at Saybrook. New students may not substitute a conference during the first two semesters(12 months) of their program.

Re-admitted students (who are required to take the introductory research course) may not substitute a conference during their first semester (M.A. students) and two semesters (Ph.D. students)

June RC may not be substituted. All students are required to attend the June RC. Students may request IN ADVANCE of the RC to substitute for the JANUARY RC any one of the following:

  • Annual Meeting of the American Psychological Association www.apa.org/conf.html (4 full days required, mentored by an Executive Faculty member)
  • Socially Engaged Spirituality certificate program additional residencies (Supervised by Dr. Donald Rothberg)
  • Expressive Arts certificate program additional residencies (Supervised by Dr. Natalie Rogers)
  • A professional conference directly related to the curriculum and academic areas of Saybrook graduate school at which three Saybrook EXECUTIVE FACULTY are in attendance AND presenting on the program.

In addition, specific conferences have been pre-approved by the various concentrations. Attendance at any one of the following is deemed an acceptable substitution.

Students who choose to attend an alternative conference must have an executive faculty sponsor from the appropriate concentration. Before attending the conference it is the responsibility of the faculty sponsor to develop, with the student, a Learning Agreement that outlines the learning goals and outcomes that will be achieved during the conference and an assignment(s) that will demonstrate that learning has occurred. The plan is presented, in writing, to the sponsor who will approve the plan BEFORE THE CONFERENCE, and following the conference the sponsor will also review the assignment(s) required and sign off on the substitution form. While no academic credit is given for substituted events, the Learning Contract can be negotiated with the Executive Faculty member that can meet the standards of an Independent Study course.

Before attending the substituted conference, the student will submit to the conference director for pre-approval by the Assistant Academic Dean/Dean of Students:

  1. A Conference Substitution Form to be signed by the Academic Advisor
  2. A Learning Agreement to be negotiated with an Executive Faculty member in advance

Following attendance of the substituted event, students must submit the following to the Conference Director in order for it to be recorded:

  1. tangible documentation of attendance for the entire event
  2. a copy of the completed learning agreement signed by the supervising faculty member
  3. and any other required academic work or learning product required by the supervising faculty member
In order to insure that the substituted conference is comparable to an RC, faculty would like the student to design assignments with their faculty sponsor that would be equivalent before attending the conference. Even if the conference is fewer days, it is expected that the faculty member and the learner will design a plan that would make it comparable in intensity and quality of learning to a one week long RC. This might entail additional reading, multiple assignments, a post-conference presentation to other students on-line or at a subsequent RC, or similar innovations.
