Payment Obligations

Students are expected to meet their payment obligations according to their Student Agreement (i.e., Tuition Payment Options Agreement). Late Payment Fees of $50 are assessed on students who fail to meet deadlines for any payment or other designated events identified in all Saybrook forms and applications.

Students should expect to be enrolled continuously during their studies at Saybrook. Tuition is owed through the end of the semester unless a student withdraws or takes a medical leave. No refunds are made after 60% of the semester period has elapsed. Students are advised that all tuition amounts and fees included herein are reported only for the current catalog year and may change in the future. All fees are reviewed annually and may be subject to increase by Saybrook at any time.

Administrative Hold

Students whose payments have not been received in accordance with the terms outlined in their Tuition Payment Option Agreement, or by additional deadlines identified in the Saybrook University Catalog, will have a temporary administrative hold placed on their record. All academic services will be suspended until the Business office releases this hold. Students on administrative hold are ineligible to enroll in courses, submit assignments to the faculty, receive transcript dispersal, have Saybrook website access, or receive other instructional services.

Non-Cohort Degree Students

Learn More

  • Non-Cohort Tuition Course Unit Limit
Students enrolled in more than 16 units in one semester will be charged a per unit fee for units exceeding 16 units.  The 16 units does not include units earned by attending residential conferences.
  • Non-Cohort MA and PhD in Psychology, Organizational Systems and Human Science
Non-cohort tuition for the 2011-12 Academic Year is USD $21,400 or $10,700 per semester for all 31-unit MA and 76-unit PhD programs. Enrollment above 16 units per semester incurs an additional $860 per unit cost and a $100 fee for unit pricing. Unless otherwise identified, students are subject to the standard Saybrook fee structure.
  • Master’s Completion
Master’s students who have only their master’s thesis or project to complete and are in their final semester of work will pay a $100 fee plus $860 per unit for project or thesis if no other courses are taken in this semester.
  • Non-Cohort Program Doctoral Research Grants
Doctoral Research Grants are awarded to Non-Cohort students at the time the dissertation proposal is approved by the candidate's dissertation committee. This 37% reduction for the 2011/2012 academic year in tuition costs will be posted to the student's account when the student's committee chair enters the dissertation proposal approval date in SMS. This grant should be activated beginning the Monday of the following week in which the proposal was approved and requires no application process.

If a credit then resulted on the student's account, it would be refunded to the student upon the student's request by contacting the Business office at tuition@saybrook.edu. Students should consult their committee chair if they have questions regarding the status of their dissertation proposal.

    Financial Aid
For applicants who send in their financial aid documents in an untimely manner, disbursements may not necessarily coincide with the tuition payment due dates and may be subject to late fees. Payments are due in accord with the Student Agreement (i.e., Tuition Payment Option Agreement) which each student signs every semester in SMS, regardless of the status of loan applications or anticipated disbursements.

Conference Fees

Most programs require students to attend a Residential Orientation (RO) in September or March, as well as a Residential Conference (RC) in January and June. (See specific degree program description to determine whether your program has this requirement and for the appropriate schedule). The residential orientation fee is non-refundable once the semester has commenced. All students required to attend a Residential Conference must submit the non-refundable fee with their tuition. Ph.D. students who have advanced to candidacy prior to the commencement of the RC and M.A. students working solely on their M.A. thesis/project and have completed all other coursework for their degree prior to the commencement of the RC, are not required to attend Residential Conferences and will be entitled to a full refund. Students with approved excused absences after December 15th (fall semester) or May 15th (spring semester) will be charged a $225 cancellation fee. No refunds will be granted after the commencement of the RC. Accommodation fees are paid separately and directly to the hotel and, therefore, are subject to terms specified by the hotel.
