The mission of a scholar-practitioner is to unify the library and the street. 

Scholar-practitioners develop both new ideas and new practices;  they envision change and act on it.

Saybrook’s mission is to help our students answer the question: “What does it mean to be human in the 21st century?”, and then contribute to that humanity.  Wherever their life’s work takes them ... the advancement of psychology, the development of new medical techniques, the support of struggling communities, the founding of sustainable practices … the scholar-practitioner is at the heart of our educational model. 

Our scholar-practitioner in residence program looks outside our own community to recognize individuals who exemplify the humanistic scholar-practitioner by virtue of their work and high achievement in disciplines that embrace Saybrook values and principles. They emphasize the importance of life-long learning, creative curiosity in support of new knowledge, and the application of this knowledge in service to the larger community.

As Saybrook’s Scholar-Practitioner for 2012, Chip Conley will be working directly with our students, faculty, and staff.  He’ll introduce them to his own work, and help support their efforts to unify the library and the street in their own life’s work. 

He’ll also connect Saybrook, as an institution, to the world he lives and works in.  Whether working with his peers in the high-end hospitality industry or presenting his new best-selling book “Emotional Equations,” Chip will represent Saybrook, and its humanistic education, to the world even as we learn from him.

From making presentations to meeting with students, from holding colloquia to hands-on development, Chip Conley will make his role as Saybrook’s first Scholar-Practitioner in Residence as unique as he has made his business and books.
