Dr Johnson is a clinical and health psychologist who has been in practice and teaching for over 30 years. She received her degrees from the University of Michigan and Boston University. She offers courses in clinical psychology, social psychology, multiculturalism, personality, and health related issues. She has served at Saybrook University in a variety of roles including Co-Chair of the Faculty and of the Faculty Senate, Director of Clinical Training, Director of the Certificate in Multicultural Psychology and Social Justice, and Director of the Psychology Degree Program. She has developed and administered Clinical Psychology Internship Programs, community mental health programs, and she has taught and supervised graduate students in their clinical work from an eclectic perspective informed by humanistic and relational psychodynamic approaches.
Her clinical work has included psychotherapy with individual and couples, community mental health, and working with the severely mental ill and substance abusers. She offers consultation and coaching around the ongoing process of developing cultural competence, and she works with graduate students and clinicians around race, power and privilege in mental health and health care work. She has particular interests in chronic health issues, cancer, assisted reproductive technology, multicultural families and biracial individuals and the intersection between health, culture and psychotherapy. She is mother to two young men, and continues to look for ways to integrate her interest in music into her work with students
