About 14 students and as many alumnae/i have filled out applications for the program, and 4 mentoring relationships have been established.

After a day of attending the January RC as mentor and faculty of the College of Mind-Body Medicine, I was honored to return the next day, January 14th, to present at the Saybrook Board of Trustees meeting as a PHS alumna.

Our group of PHS presenters, with Robert Schmitt as dean, Willson Williams from the faculty, and Brett Joseph as a current student, had spoken briefly on the phone before appearing together at the board meeting, and had looked at the questions the board sent us to review. Our presentation was less a formal response to those questions than an opportunity to share our experience of the past, descriptions of the present, and dreams and plans for the possible future of PHS within the larger structure of Saybrook University. The board wanted to absorb our stories and presence, getting a deeper sense of our college than a dry written report could have provided. I am appreciative that we have a board that wants to know about "the vitality, the passion, the energy" of our college, as the first question put it. As our university grows and PHS continues to transition from being Saybrook to being part of Saybrook, the board's understanding of who we are and who we have been can aid them in guiding the university forward without losing its essence.

Saybrook Alumna Dr. Hillary Webb (Ph.D. '09) releases Yanantin and Masintin in the Andean World: Complementary Dualism in Modern Peru (University of New Mexico Press, 2012)

Saybrook Alumna Dr. Charlene Block (Ph.D. '03) Sent a Seasonal Note about The Beth Block Foundation


Saybrook Alumna Dr. Charlene Block (Ph.D. '03) updates us about the foundation honoring her daughter Beth Block:


Generally, every Christmas Beth would E-Mail a card off using an image she made
that she felt conveyed the spirit of the season. However the card also seemed to say,
"Hi it's Beth -how ya doin'.” It is that reaching out and fostering of connection that has prompted the formation of "The Beth Block Foundation".

Eureka, we have finally obtained the coveted 501(c)(3) status that allows us to be a non profit charitable organization. To honor and carry on Beth's work, scholarships and grants will be awarded to individuals and groups that are involved in lens based photography.

So, sans the image, just wanted to wish everyone Happy Holidays, and let you know that the foundation's website will be up and running within the next month with all the necessary details about it's direction and award process.

News about Student Loans from



Lots of exciting things on the student loan reform front are in the works for the upcoming year - we've already won a few battles over the course of the last 3 years, but the real fight is only just beginning. With the Presidential and Congressional elections a mere 11 months away, and all of our allies are determined to make student loan debt a major issue of the 2012 campaign and, to do that, as always, we need your help!

Young Invincibles is one such ally engaged in the fight to restore sanity to the way in which we pay for higher education in America. They are a group that formed in a law school cafeteria in 2009 over concerns that their voices weren't being heard during the protracted debate over health care reform. Over the course of the last 2.5 years, they've grown to become one of the leading voices in Washington, D.C., representing the interests of 18-34 year olds with respect to public policy.

They've put together a brief survey about students' experiences with student loan debt so as to better serve their constituency - a constituency that has a great deal of overlap with ours. As such, I'm asking everyone to take a few moments of their time to complete this brief survey so as to help our new friends out. We need all the allies we can muster, and Young Invincibles is a great one to have!

Faculty Positions Open at Institute of Transpersonal Psychology



The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology invites applications for two core faculty positions in our spiritually-oriented Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology program, which is currently seeking APA accreditation.

In the first role, eligible candidates will have previous experience in obtaining APA accreditation or other integral involvement in the APA accreditation process, hold a Psy.D. or Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from an APA accredited program, be licensed or license-eligible in California, be qualified to teach and supervise clinical students, and possess appropriate research skills and experience. Transpersonal psychology and/or spiritually-oriented background, interest, and/or publications required. Experiential teaching experience preferred. This position is contingent upon availability of funds.

In the second role, eligible candidates will hold a Psy.D. or Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, be licensed or license-eligible in California, be qualified to teach and supervise clinical students, and possess appropriate research skills and experience. This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate who is interested in integrating spirituality and clinical psychology in teaching, research, and practice. Experiential teaching experience preferred.

Founded in 1975, ITP is a regionally accredited (WASC), non-sectarian private graduate institute with an outstanding faculty in teaching, research activities, publications, and leadership in the transpersonal field. ITP offers MAs and PhDs in Clinical and Transpersonal Psychology in on-campus and distance learning programs with more than 500 students. Grants Available in the Study of Gratitude at Greater Good Science Center


New GGSC Project: Expanding the Science and Practice of Gratitude

*Call for Research Proposals*

For years, gratitude has been central to our work here at the Greater Good Science Center (GGSC). In fact, it's one of our Six Habits of Happiness--meaning it's a research-tested, everyday practice that's key to living a rich and healthy life, in compassionate connection to others.

That's why we're thrilled to announce the launch of a $5.9 million, three-year project to advance the study of gratitude, including a research grant competition for which we're now accepting proposals. Read on for details about how you can apply or help us find qualified researchers.

Expanding the Science and Practice of Gratitude is a GGSC collaboration with Professor Robert Emmons of the University of California, Davis, funded by the John Templeton Foundation. Its goals are to deepen the scientific understanding of gratitude, promote evidence-based gratitude practices in places like schools and hospitals, and engage the public in a broader cultural conversation about the role of gratitude in our society.

The first part of this project is a $3 million research initiative. We'll be awarding grants of up to $500,000 for research projects that take the science of gratitude to the next level.

If you're a researcher interested in applying, please read the Request for Proposals (RFP) to learn more about this ground-breaking initiative.

If you think friends, colleagues, or members of your network might like to apply--or if you'd just like to help us get the word out about the initiative--please direct members of your community to the project's website. In the future, the GGSC will host a competition for innovative web-based and mobile apps that promote the practice of gratitude, hold a public event to explore the applications of gratitude research, expand coverage of gratitude on our website, and launch a Global Gratitude Journal that will enable people from around the world to record the things for which they're most grateful.
