He is a life member of the Minnesota Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the International Society of Performance Improvement. He maintains an active practice in clinical hypnosis in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Dr. Wark is a leader in the use of alert eyes-open and active hypnosis. He has published 2 books and 80 articles, plus an edited volume on clinical hypnosis available on line: http://asch.net/Public/PublicLibrary/tabid/209/Default.aspx
Dr. Wark has observed that the widespread stereotype of hypnosis as a sleep like state is misleading. Anton Mesmer's 18th century patients were not sleepy, calm, or even relaxed. Later the Hungarian medical hypnotist Eva Banyai experimented with wide awake hypnosis inductions and concluded that the sleep like quality of many hypnotized subjects was an artifact of the particular induction language used in their inductions. David Wark, drawing on this earlier work, has developed a number of induction strategies for alert wide awake hypnosis. Wark emphasizes the value of alert hypnosis for enhancing learning skills and other educational applications. A sleep-like trance is not optimal for exam preparation! Wark has used alert self-hypnosis approaches to help students optimize their study and learning. In his talk, he will describe these and other clinical applications of alert hypnosis.
