this is a wonderful post. the issue of developing empathy, is a systemic one. Some of us are only empathic to one person--ourselves. that is narcissism. Others extend it to a close family, or a personal network. Others are able to experience empathy to people they do not have a personal relationship to, in a wider circle. This is the crux of emotional intelligence--how wide a network we are open to.

Interestingly, I note that we are all aware of Cohen's brother, Sasha, who is the noted filmmaker of satiric works like Borat, and who is also an educator scholar of ethics himself. Interesting family.
