Saybrook Alumnus Dr. Steve Wolf (Ph.D. '86) Held a Two Hour CEU Presentation in January on Taming Your Anger

Saybrook Alumnus Dr. Steve Wolf (Ph.D. '86) held two hour (Two CEU) presentation, sponsored by the Iranian Psychological Association on Taming Your Anger.

Steve discussed the underlying principles of Taming Your Anger, the history of Emotional Intelligence and the value of teaching Emotional Intelligence for developing Mindfulness, Insight, improved Emotional Regulation, and greater Self Control.

Dr. Wolf developed Taming Your Anger based on principles of Cognitive Behavioral Psychology.

He and others have observed hard core two-strikers on Parole, women in prison, and At-Risk Teens on Probation successfully use this method to develop the necessary self control to deal with anger expression.

The educational objectives of this class were to elucidate:

1) The Four Tools of the Taming Your Anger Method
2) EQ Breathing: a Mindfulness method
3) The four Dimensions of Emotional Intelligence
4) The difference between Primary and Secondary Emotions
5) The difference between Real and Imagined Emotions

Tenure Track Position Open in Human Development and Family Studies at University of Nevada

The Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) program within the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor beginning July 1, 2012.

The HDFS program provides a range of courses that cover lifespan development in the context of the family, community, and society. The program offers an undergraduate major and Master’s degree in HDFS and supports an area of concentration for elementary education majors in Early Childhood Education (ECE). Collaborations among faculty members within the College of Education, Cooperative Extension, school districts statewide, community agencies, and with faculty and teachers at the Child and Family Research Center are common. The Child and Family Research Center has historical links to the HDFS program, and offers the potential for research collaboration in an accredited Early Head Start program site inspired by the schools of Reggio Emilia.

The program is seeking an assistant professor (tenure track) to teach a 2+3 semester-based course load in courses related to early childhood education/development; engage in an ongoing, focused research program which results in scholarly publications and funded grants; and contribute to professional, university, and community service. Courses to be taught can be negotiable, depending on the strengths of the applicant, and could include, but not be limited to, the following: Preschool curriculum I and II (two-semester sequence), Children and Families in a Multi-ethnic Society, Theories of Human Development, Child Development and/or Lifespan Human Development, and Assessment of Children Birth to Age 8. Teaching responsibilities include a share of the advisement duties to the program’s undergraduate and master’s students.

The successful candidate must hold an earned doctorate in an educational field directly related to early childhood development/education. Candidates must be capable of teaching courses in the HDFS program, and show productivity or strong potential for a program of research and grant acquisition.
Preference will be given to applicants with supporting expertise in family studies, diversity, and/or life span human development. Certifications such as a teaching certificate in ECE, full status as a Certified Family Life Educator, or a Child Life Specialist will be highly considered.

These submissions will be published in the first section of the Bulletin,
highlighting most recent work from the membership of ISSS.

Submissions should be no longer than 1500 words (4 pages single spaced).

For the bulletin, other items of interest are also welcome for the
membership sections such as notices of future conferences, calls for papers
for related peer-reviewed journals, new books, employment
announcements, new courses, etc...

Full-time Psychology Faculty Position—Bakersfield, CA

National University, Department of Psychology, invites applications for a one-year Full-Time faculty position in Bakersfield, CA.

The position may be renewable subject to budgetary considerations.

Responsibilities
The faculty member will teach on-site undergraduate graduate and counseling psychology courses. The appointee will also have the responsibility for management of an off-site BA Interdisciplinary Studies programs in Portersville, CA, and on-site MA Counseling Psychology courses at the Bakersfield center, which includes hiring, training, staffing and oversight of adjunct teachers, academic advising of students, interviewing/oversight of graduate students, coordination of off-site practicum agencies, and conformity of the programs to Departmental and University standards and procedures. Full-Time faculty members contribute to departmental governance and attend monthly on-line faculty meetings, and bi-annual faculty meetings in San Diego.

Qualifications
An MA in a mental health discipline from an accredited institution, with a current license as MFT is required; a PhD, PsyD. or EdD with (or close to) license is preferred. The preferred candidate should have interest in graduate and undergraduate education with specific expertise in strengths based counseling psychology. Candidates should have experience and commitment to adult learners, and commitment to diversity in student populations and services to diverse client populations.

“When I finally sought help, I was put on what I call the Army’s ‘quick fix’ program—the antidepressant Zoloft,” he says. “After that, I was seen once a month by the psychiatrist, usually for five minutes, maybe 10, and that was just to get my prescription renewed.”

Gonzalez says his doctors never discussed coping strategies. “I was depressed. I had thoughts of suicide,” he says. “But there was never really any advice from the psychiatrist, like, ‘This is what you could be doing to get better.”

For years, the conference has been addressing Integrative Treatment and the adverse reactions of psychiatric medication, discussing extensively the first black box warning on the medications being suicidality. This conference also requested Congress hold hearings on the relationship between suicide and the use of psychiatric medication.
