Hello, I'm Dominique Avery, and I use she/her & they/them pronouns. I started at Saybrook in 2017 after I received my PhD in Counselor Education at Idaho State University in Meridian, Idaho. I have worked previously as a Teaching Assistant at Idaho State University and Messiah College, and as Adjunct Faculty at Idaho State University.
I first became interested in the field of counseling when I started work with children and adolescents in outdoor therapeutic settings. My diverse background includes: starting a Forest Schools program focused on social and emotional learning with young children in the woodlands of England, leading wilderness therapy groups in the deserts of Idaho, and caring for teens in an adolescent shelter home. Most recently, my clinical passion has been holding healing space for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, LGBTQ youth, and refugee children and their families. I am EMDR trained and hold additional certification in traumatology.
I've engaged in both qualitative and quantitative research, although I am most drawn to blended methodologies such as Q methodology. I used Q methodology in my dissertation focused on counselor educators' perspectives on teaching trauma counseling in counselor education, have consulted on Q method research projects, and presented on the method at national conferences. My current scholarship and leadership focus is on White counselor educator accountability with antiracism in counselor education, cultural humility, and culturally responsive practice.
I believe in advancing the field of counseling and counselor education towards greater justice and equity for all. I approach all aspects of counselor education through a social justice and liberatory lens. I strive to bring creativity, play, and deep relationships to my teaching, supervision, and leadership/advocacy work.
