Biography

I received my Ph.D. in Psychology from U. Chicago and am an elected Fellow of APS and APA (D1 General, D2 Teaching, D46 Media, D48 Peace, and D52 International). I have over 20 years of extensive experience in managing organizations and projects in APA divisions, state government, and academe. I am Past President of APA's Society for Media Psychology and Technology (D46), and Past President of APA's Society for Peace, Conflict, and Violence (D48). I served D48 for three years as its Convention Program Chair (2020-2022), and, for four years was Editor of D52's International Psychology Bulletin, receiving its President's Award for Extraordinary Service. Among other honors, I received the Academic Service Award from American University of Phnom Penh, am listed in Marquis Who's Who in America and was twice a NEH Fellow (Black/Indigenous Resistance). I am the 2023 recipient of the Frances Mullen Award for Distinguished Contributions to International Psychology (ICP: International Council of Psychologists). I have lived, worked, and taught in Alaska, India, and Cambodia, and elsewhere in the USA and online.

I have published over 300 peer-reviewed scholarly works (peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews) in such top journals as American Psychologist, Journal of Positive Psychology, Humanistic Psychologist, Professional Psychology, Caribbean Journal of Psychology, and Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment, and Trauma. I am the senior editor of eleven academic books, including Pathfinders in International Psychology; Internationalizing the Teaching of Psychology; Human Strengths and Resilience; Teaching Psychology Around the World, Volumes 4 and 5; Psychology in Southeast Asia (2020); Psychology in Oceania and the Caribbean (2022); and Psychosocial experiences and adjustment of migrants: Coming to the USA (2023). I am lead editor of the Handbook of Global Psychology Teaching (in contract, Rich, G., Nordmann, E., Searight, R., Mampane, R., Reece, J., & Padilla-Lopez, A. (Eds)). I authored an extensive textbook supplement for a best-selling Allyn & Bacon Abnormal Psychology text and have a sole-authored book currently in contract (Resilience and Post-Traumatic Growth: Cross-Cultural and Developmental Perspectives). I'm co-editor of two Springer book series: International and Cultural Psychology and the new Media Psychology series. I'm lead co-editor of the Handbook of Media Psychology: The Science and the Practice (Springer, 2024) with V. Krishna Kumar and Frank Farley. I have served on several editorial boards (e.g., PLOS One, APA's Traumatology, APA's Peace & Conflict). I have offered over 110 professional presentations in the USA and internationally, including APA, AERA, AAA, APS, IAAP, and ICP, from Africa, Australia, and Europe, to Mexico, South America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East.

I have an abiding interest in behavioral health technologies (e.g., prescription digital therapeutics (PDTs) and Experience Sampling Methods [ESM]). I am a leader in online and global education with many publications focused on diversifying psychology education via online technologies (e.g., MOOCs). I have over twenty years of experience teaching courses in psychology, research design, methods, and mathematics to undergraduate and doctoral students, at institutions in the USA, South and Southeast Asia. I am a licensed and national certified massage therapist, and have served a term as elected member on its national certifying board (NCBTMB), and published in IJTMB, and Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies (JBMT) and serve on those editorial boards as well.

A licensed social worker, I have served on many medical missions internationally and traveled to over 33 nations. I was the primary grant writer for several major federal SAMHSA grants (e.g., $2 million and $2.8 million SAMHSA COVID-19 emergency grants; $7.9 million ARPA and $7.3 million Appropriations Act Mental Health and Substance Abuse Block Grants). I reside in Juneau, Alaska where I am a research analyst with Alaska's Behavioral Health Division.

My passions include animals and music and my current projects include a book on human-animal interactions, a chapter on methodological diversity, and an article on creativity in musical improvisation.
