Bio: John (Sean) Hinton
Dr Hinton studied Jungian depth psychology at the Pacifica Graduate Institute PhD program and received a Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology Palo Alto CA, he also received an MBA from the Graziadio School of Business and Management, Pepperdine University, in Malibu, California. Dr Hinton has presented several times at SAC (Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness) and Eurotas on his studies on non-ordinary states of consciousness, spiritual experiences, philosophy of mind, and PSI phenomena. Sean has an undergraduate degree in philosophy and did graduate work in philosophy (phenomenology) at Cal State Northridge. Dr Hinton has been published in both peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed publications. He was born in Southern California and lives in Carlsbad, California near the Pacific Ocean.
Dr Hinton has served as chair on over 18 dissertation committees and served on another 20 dissertation committees as a non-chairing member. As such he has had to navigate the intricacies of a variety of methodologies while serving on these committees. Included would be Grounded Theory, Phenomenological Analysis, Narrative, Heuristic Inquiry, and Quantitative analysis.
Dr Hinton's Interests include non-ordinary states of consciousness, spiritual experiences, numinous experience integration, and personal life meaning. He wrote his Dissertation on Spiritual Aspects of Individuation: Numinous Experiences and Life Meaning using mixed methods including Art, Heuristic Inquiry, Quantitative, and Narrative analysis. As a teacher, he encourages open dialogue as essential to the writing process, and in his courses, he may use meditation, expressive art, and active imagination as forms of contemplation and deeper inquiry.
His other activities outside of academia include a Consulting business with high-tech businesses doing strategic planning and leadership development.
Other interests, include writing poetry, design, woodworking, reading about physics, religion, and philosophy, hiking local trails, and world travel to ancient spiritual sites.
