Hello, I'm Katie Horton, and I use she/her pronouns. I started teaching at Saybrook in 2025 and currently serve as an adjunct faculty. I received my Master's of Counseling and PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at Saybrook University.
I first became interested in pursuing counseling as a career through my experiences volunteering as a peer mentor and facilitating a Trans support group in my local community, through the advice and support of my own therapist. She believed I would be of great value to this community and supporting others within it. It is there that I found I had the passion to help others find their path through the challenges they were going through. Through this and my experiences in my education, and through 3+ years of being in private practice. My clinical experience expanded to working with the LGBTQIA+ and other diverse communities, and those in alternative relationships. I hold a strong connection to the humanistic and narrative lenses, through a culturally responsive and culturally humility-focused practice.
My dissertation was focused on understanding trans community members' perspectives on what competencies therapists should have when working with these communities. I use a blended methodology called Q methodology. I wish to expand, continuing to use more blended, mixed, and other forms of research in the near future. My current focus is building towards a deeper understanding of how we can bring more connections to working with the trans community as therapists in scholarship and within our educational curriculum.
