My area of expertise is phenomenology and hermeneutics, and the foundations of these approaches in the philosophy of Edmund Husserl, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Paul Ricoeur. I typically serve as Chair or Methodologist for Existential Phenomenological dissertations. I am member of the Editorial Boards of multiple scholarly journals in qualitative research, and review book proposals for academic presses.
My most recent work are studies in the phenomenology of religious experience. Previous publications have focused on research methods--for example, the ongoing dialogue between descriptive and interpretive approaches in qualitative psychological research. My primary research focus is the phenomenological study of consciousness, as well as intercultural psychology, and the psychological study of leadership. I make extensive, practical use of phenomenology in my organizational consulting work in Silicon Valley.
I have worked in both the community mental health, tech, and nonprofit fields. I served as a clinical case manager in San Francisco's community mental health system for more than nine years, working with formerly homeless, dual-diagnosed adults, and have worked for more than twenty years in the organizational psychology field, specializing in the coaching and assessment of agile teams and their leaders. I live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area.
