Sheridan J. Rian, PhD, LPC-S, PPS, NCC, RYT is a core faculty member at Saybrook University in the Department of Counseling, and teaches in both the Master's and Doctoral programs. Dr. Rian earned a Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision at the University of Nevada, Reno; M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Spirituality and Religion at Monmouth University; and B.A. (Hons) in Psychology and Holistic Health from Georgian Court University - in addition to post-graduate studies in meditation, Buddhist philosophy, and acupuncture at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Dongzhimen Hospital in Beijing. Furthermore, Dr. Rian is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Supervisor, Licensed School Counselor, Certified Ecotherapist, Registered Yoga Teacher, and has received extensive training in Ecotherapy, Existential Analysis, Spiritual & Religious Counseling, Play Therapy, Mindfulness, Meditation, Somatic Therapy, and Gender, Sexual & Romantic Diversity.
Prior to becoming a counselor educator, Dr. Rian primarily worked with children outdoors in various capacities as a nature-based play therapist, swim instructor and coach, lifeguard, camp counselor, and summer camp director. An avid nature lover who grew up on the Jersey shore before venturing out to the mountains of Tahoe, Dr. Rian's ecotherapy research and practice are shaped by a profound personal connection to the earth. Dr. Rian's scholarly interests include ecotherapy, outdoor education, environmental justice, religion & spirituality, and holistic health.
In all professional capacities, Dr. Rian values authenticity and creating a brave spaces for critical reflection to nurture radical growth, compassion, and genuine human connection.
