Mastering Psychophysiological Interventions for Optimal Human Functioning

Our online Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine: Applied Psychophysiology Specialization program immerses you in an evidence-based examination of the diverse ways the brain and the body interact to influence human behavior and positions you as an expert in alleviating medical disorders and optimizing performance. This online doctoral program, regionally accredited by the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance, is your road to enhancing insights and applying successful psychophysiological interventions for a wide range of typical and atypical clients, for whom traditional treatments were unsuccessful.

Within the Applied Psychophysiology Specialization curriculum, you will learn about the body’s organizational structure and genetics as related to behavior, current scientific approaches to biofeedback research, how biofeedback is utilized in psychotherapy, optimal performance training in sports and the arts, common psychophysiological recording techniques used in behavioral medicine, including surface electromyography, electroencephalography, respiration, blood pressure, pulse rate, skin temperature, and electrodermal responses.

Applied Psychophysiology Specialization Job Outcomes

Upon graduating from our online doctoral program, you will have an enhanced skill set and deepened perspective to augment your current practice or, with the appropriate licensure, expand into other psychophysiology roles and settings, including:

  • Private practice
  • Military
  • Education

Admissions Requirements

At a minimum, you must have received, or anticipate receiving prior to the start of the semester you are applying into, a master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university before applying for the online mind-body medicine doctoral degree at Saybrook.

Applicants for the Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine: Applied Psychophysiology Specialization degree must submit the following documents:

  • An official transcript from an accredited university demonstrating successful completion of a master’s degree, with a 3.0 GPA or better
  • Professional resume or CV
  • Personal statement
  • Writing sample (if the department chair determines the personal statement contains grammatical mistakes, spelling errors, or poorly organized text)

New students must provide official transcripts showing completion of an undergraduate or graduate-level science course in the past 10 years, with a minimum grade of a B in anatomy and/or physiology. Without this introductory science prerequisite course, you will need to add IFN 5704 Anatomy and Physiology as an elective within your first year. Alternatively, you may complete the basic anatomy and physiology course from Saybrook’s academic partner, StraighterLine.

Sample Courses

Fundamentals of Psychophysiology

This three-credit online psychophysiology course explores the manifold ways the brain and body work together to produce behavior and the cycle between behavior and physiology. The course begins with a description of the body’s organizational structure and genetics as related to behavior. The applied psychophysiology graduate-level course then describes the basic physiological ways information is received from the external and internal environments through a variety of sensors and then processed by the hormonal/nervous system.

Basic Training and Education in Biofeedback

This three-credit online course provides you with an introductory level of understanding to engage in biofeedback-based clinical practice and psychophysiological research in integrative health. You will acquire a basic skill set to conduct simple biofeedback interventions, along with knowledge about biofeedback concepts and approaches, and gain a familiarity with research-based applications of biofeedback to common medical and behavioral disorders. This online doctoral psychophysiology course introduces the most used biofeedback instruments, the physiological systems they measure, and the applications of these biofeedback modalities to common medical and behavioral disorders.

Psychophysiological Recording, Assessment, and Interventions

This online three-credit applied psychophysiology course provides a basic understanding of the physiology and methodology underlying common psychophysiological recording techniques used in behavioral medicine. These include surface electromyography, electroencephalography, respiration, blood pressure, pulse rate, skin temperature, and electrodermal responses. Sufficient knowledge about how common psychophysiological recording and biofeedback instrument function is provided so you can incorporate psychophysiological aspects of assessment into your normal practices.
