Saybrook University’s Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine: Integrative Wellness Coaching Specialization program draws upon insights from mind-body practices and evidence-based research so you can affect powerful, positive change for those seeking enhanced personal wellness and lifestyle balance. You will emerge from this program as an integrative wellness coach, supporting individuals through solutions-focused, holistic, and sustainable approaches to wellness.

Through this online doctoral program, you will explore the best practice approaches to supporting the well-being of others, coaching scope of practice, and application of coaching frameworks to facilitate effective coaching. Within the Integrative Wellness Coaching Specialization curriculum, you will also study evidence-based coaching, intermediate and advanced coaching, foundations in lifestyle medicine, positive psychology, telehealth, and mind-body interventions.

Upon completion of the Integrative Wellness Coaching doctoral specialization, you will obtain Saybrook’s Integrative Wellness Coaching Certificate. This certificate program is accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) as a Level 1 program with 125 contact hours and is a National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) Approved Training Program with 88 instructional hours.

Admission requirements

At a minimum, you must have received or anticipate receiving prior to the start of the semester you are applying into, a master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university before applying for a doctoral degree at Saybrook. Applicants for the online Ph.D. in Mind-Body: Integrative Wellness Coaching Specialization degree must submit the following documents:

  • An official transcript from an accredited university demonstrating successful completion of a master’s degree, with a 3.0 GPA or better
  • Professional resume or CV
  • Personal statement
  • Writing sample (if the department chair determines the personal statement contains grammatical mistakes, spelling errors, or poorly organized text)

New students must provide official transcripts showing completion of an undergraduate or graduate-level science course in the past 10 years, with a minimum of a B in anatomy and/or physiology. Without this introductory science prerequisite course, you will need to add IFN 5704 Anatomy and Physiology as an elective within your first year. Alternatively, you may complete the basic anatomy and physiology course from Saybrook’s academic partner, StraighterLine.

Foundations of Lifestyle Medicine

This three-credit online course for Integrative Wellness Coaching doctoral students presents a comprehensive overview of lifestyle medicine and optimizing pathways toward greater well-being. As a foundations course, you will be introduced to holistic approaches to assess various dimensions of personal wellness. Each week, you will explore a new dimension of wellness by reviewing and critiquing literature and assessment in positive health, lifestyle medicine, health promotion, and cultural humility and sensitivity. This Mind-Body Medicine class is fundamental in preparing you for a career in wellness coaching and consulting.

Positive Psychology Applications in Coaching

You will learn about and apply the primary coaching theories within positive psychology to enhance your work with individuals and organizations focusing on human strengths and values, eudemonic well-being, and quality of life. This three-credit Ph.D. MBM: Integrative Wellness Coaching course emphasizes the psychosocial underpinnings related to human flourishing as well as empirically validated assessments and interventions to use with coaching clients in various settings. Finally, you will be presented with coaching tools for empowering individuals toward optimal well-being, engagement, and productivity.

Evidence-Based Coaching

Experience a comprehensive overview of the foundational coaching competencies and skills as defined by the International Coach Federation (ICF), National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), and Center for Credentialing and Education (Board Certified Coach). Throughout the duration of the online integrative wellness coaching course, you will (a) learn about the similarities and differences between coaching, counseling, and consulting; (b) apply the coaching framework and skills to facilitate effective coaching conversations and processes; (c) review the theories and evidence-based approaches that support the coaching process and its outcomes; and (d) discuss career opportunities within the coaching profession.

University Learning Experience

Students enrolled in the Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine degree program must attend any Community or Virtual Learning Experience as required for the courses in which they choose to enroll. Refer to the course descriptions for requirements. All new students begin their studies with a Welcome Week. Welcome Week activities, including a degree program orientation, are held online during the week ahead of the start of the Fall and Spring semesters. Participation is strongly encouraged. New Mind-Body Medicine students also participate in the Mind-Body-Spirit Integration (MBSI) Seminar. The MBSI consists of two full days of experiential learning (virtual or community learning experiences), and four, four-hour virtual sessions on consecutive Saturdays. Refer to the course description for requirements.
