Program Components
Admission requirements
At a minimum, you must have received, or anticipate receiving prior to the start of the semester you are applying into, a master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university before applying for a doctoral degree at Saybrook. Applicants for the Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine: Mindful Leadership Specialization degree must submit the following documents:
- An official transcript from an accredited university demonstrating successful completion of a master’s degree, with a 3.0 GPA or better
- Professional resume or CV
- Personal statement
- Writing sample (if the department chair determines the personal statement contains grammatical mistakes, spelling errors, or poorly organized text)
New students must provide official transcripts showing completion of an undergraduate or graduate-level science course in the past 10 years, with a minimum grade of a B in anatomy and/or physiology. Without this introductory science prerequisite course, you will need to add IFN 5704 Anatomy and Physiology as an elective within your first year. Alternatively, you may complete the basic anatomy and physiology course from Saybrook’s academic partner, StraighterLine.

Reflective Leadership in Healthcare
This online three-credit course in reflective leadership is designed to help organizational leaders and coaches apply mindfulness techniques to enhance leadership reflectivity on an individual and collective basis. Content will explore applications of reflective practices to enhance leadership effectiveness and instill innovation and compassion in collective settings. Course readings and assignments assess diverse meditative and contemplative theory and practices drawn from Eastern and Western traditions as well as modern secular teachings to explore how mindfulness practice can convey a reflective leadership style.
Mindfulness, Meditation, and Health
In this three-credit course as part of the Mind-Body Medicine: Mindful Leadership degree, you will learn about and discuss the origins of mindfulness practices, the modern scientific underpinnings of mindfulness research, and the multiple applications of mindfulness techniques. You will learn and are supported in the personal development of simple mindfulness practice. Your personal experiences are the basis for understanding mindfulness as a tool for stress management, self-awareness and self-efficacy. You are also encouraged to assess the appropriateness of mindfulness in your own life as a spiritual practice and a way of life.
Theories and Applications in Mindful Leadership
This three-credit course explores an emerging orientation in leadership theories and practice: to intentionally incorporate mindfulness and compassion-based perspectives into practices. You will assess the characteristics and intended outcomes of various contemporary paradigms that introduce mindful and compassion principles for developing individual leadership capacities as well as shifting organizational culture to a more sustainable environment.

Will the mindful leadership specialization program include certifications to practice medicine?
No, the Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine: Mindful Leadership Specialization does not qualify graduates for medical licensure. Those who are already credentialed as healthcare practitioners can enhance their practice with integrative medicine knowledge.
Does this doctoral program require field experience?
While the core coursework for this program is completed online, some students may be required to attend certain University Learning Experiences depending on their chosen elective courses.
University Learning Experience
Students enrolled in the Ph.D. Mind-Body Medicine degree program must attend any Community or Virtual Learning Experience as required for the courses in which they choose to enroll. Refer to the course descriptions for requirements. All new students begin their studies with a Welcome Week. Welcome Week activities, including a degree program orientation, are held online during the week ahead of the start of the Fall and Spring semesters. Participation is strongly encouraged. New Mind-Body Medicine students also participate in the Mind-Body-Spirit Integration (MBSI) Seminar. The MBSI consists of two full days of experiential learning (Virtual or Community Learning Experiences), and four, four-hour virtual sessions on consecutive Saturdays.
