The multi-site PBM Rise Study is recruiting participants to investigate the effects of photobiomodulation on stress and neurological outcomes in people with epilepsy.

The PBM Rise Study, a multi-site, single-blind clinical investigation led by Dr. Cynthia Kerson of Saybrook University, is currently recruiting individuals with epilepsy to examine the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) on perceived stress and associated neurological outcomes.

Photobiomodulation is a non-invasive intervention that utilizes specific wavelengths of light to modulate cellular and metabolic activity. It is increasingly being studied for its potential applications in neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. The PBM Rise Study is designed to evaluate whether modulation of stress-related physiological processes may influence symptom expression and overall well-being in individuals with epilepsy.

Participants will be enrolled across four U.S. sites: Cincinnati and Warren, Ohio; North Miami, Florida; and Houston, Texas. The study protocol includes 45 PBM sessions, metabolic laboratory assessments, and continuous physiological monitoring using an Õura ring. In addition, participants will undergo four quantitative brain mapping (qEEG) assessments over the course of the study to evaluate changes in neural activity associated with stress regulation

“This study is designed to better characterize the relationship between stress and epileptic symptomatology, and to evaluate whether targeted physiological interventions may contribute to improved quality of life,” said Dr. Cynthia Kerson, Principal Investigator and Associate Professor in the Applied Psychophysiology Program at Saybrook University.

Participants will retain the Õura ring following study completion. Data collected from this study are expected to contribute to the growing body of research examining the interaction between stress physiology and epilepsy.

The PBM Rise Study is currently enrolling participants at all four clinical sites.
