Program Components

Admissions Requirements

Applicants who are Saybrook students in good standing may register for this certificate through the registrar as an addition to their current curriculum. Saybrook students in good standing are not required to submit additional documents for application. Saybrook student applicants for the certificate must be master’s or doctoral students in any Saybrook University master’s or doctoral program.

External students and students at large who possess at least a bachelor’s degree are eligible to enroll in the Mind-Body Medicine Certificate program. External students must provide the following:

  • Professional resume or CV
  • Official transcript from an accredited bachelor’s degree or master’s degree
  • Completion of an undergraduate or graduate-level anatomy and/or physiology course in the past 10 years with a B or better; students lacking this prerequisite course will add IFN 5704 Anatomy and Physiology or they may complete the basic anatomy and physiology course from Saybrook's academic partner, Straighter Line.
  • Personal statement

It is preferred, but not required, that applicants have some professional experience relevant to mind-body medicine.

Mind-Body Therapies and Practices

This three-credit course provides a foundational introduction to the principles and approaches of mind-body-spirit wellness. You will be introduced to the research and the practices that support health, wellness, and healing outcomes. Through readings, discussions, and practices, you will have opportunities to integrate these principles and techniques personally and professionally.

Movement Modalities for Wellness

This three-credit course reviews the importance of physical movement and exercise in the development of self-awareness, as well as the maintenance and restoration of health. You will examine research supporting the use of movement modalities such as yoga, tai chi, qigong, Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement, martial arts, aerobic exercise, dance, and others as interventions for optimal health and wellness. You will also experience several of these modalities at the Virtual Learning Experience (VLE), as well as explore and write about your experience practicing one approach.

The Human Energy Field and Energy Medicine

This course presents health and healing from an energetic perspective that has roots in ancient healing practices. Contemporary energy medicine practices involve sensing the human energy field and applying low-level energetic therapies. The primary focus of his course involves an overview of the human energy field, the scientific foundations of energy medicine, key energy medicine modalities, and diagnostic and therapeutic methods. The course covers the main systems and foundations of energy medicine being used in integrative health care applications. Students also examine pulsed electromagnetic field applications, phototherapy, as well as the measurement of subtle energies and the health effects of electromagnetic pollution. As an experiential component of the course, students incorporate energy medicine modalities as a form of enhanced self-care.

Online MBM Certificate Experience

Our Mind-Body Medicine Certificate program can be designed as a 100% online program, but there may be some limitations to course availability. While the majority of this program is completed asynchronously, several courses require synchronous, online training requirements designed to deepen your educational experience through the Virtual Learning Experience (VLE) and scheduled videoconferences throughout the semester. In addition to the VLE, you will begin your Mind-Body Medicine studies with a virtual Welcome Week. Welcome Week activities, including an MBM program orientation, are held online during the week before the start of Fall and Spring semesters. The in-person Community Learning Experience (CLE) is also available for you to explore. The CLE is held every odd-numbered year. It is optional and not required to complete the online MBM certificate program, unless the scheduled course includes a CLE participation as part of the training experience.
