The Power of Creativity in Healing and Innovation

Our online Creativity, Innovation, and Leadership Certificate is your introduction to the vital pursuit of enhanced human potential, yours and those you wish to serve. This creative certificate program explores the history of and research into creativity, as well as how it can be applied to enhance atypical settings, such as government, education, health, clinical and corporate environments.

Within the online creative coach certificate curriculum, you will study practical understandings of the creative process, how creativity can be nurtured to feed innovation, sociological factors that encourage or discourage creativity, the role of art in healing, self-expression, and broader community well-being, and more. The inherent process of leadership while creating and innovating allows for research and project development through our unique Capstone project. Explore and build upon your conceptions of creativity, your creative and innovating process, and find out where leading through creativity can take you.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants who are Saybrook students in good standing may register for this certificate through the registrar as an addition to their current curriculum. Saybrook students in good standing are not required to submit additional documents for application. Saybrook student applicants for the certificate must be master’s or doctoral students in any Saybrook University master’s or doctoral program.

External students and students at large who possess at least a bachelor’s degree are eligible to enroll in the Creativity, Innovation, and Leadership Certificate program. External students must provide the following:

  • Resume or CV
  • Official transcript from an accredited bachelor’s degree or master’s degree program
  • Personal statement

It is preferred, but not required, that applicants have some professional experience relevant to creativity studies.

Introduction to Creativity, Innovation, and Leadership

The connections between the constructs of creativity, innovation and creative leadership are studied in relation to socio-cultural influences, gender, organizational structures and through a lens of transformational and transactional leadership. The course examines creative process models, innovative product development and acquisition along with creative leaderships models. Imagery and symbolization, intrapsychic experience, and aesthetic issues are explored inclusive of art-based research. The most recent literature and research related to each construct individually and collectively are reviewed and critiqued.

Creativity Studies Capstone Project

In this three-credit course, you will critically examine, analyze, synthesize, and creatively apply theoretical and practical knowledge obtained through the previous coursework in the Creativity Studies Certificate program. The Creativity Studies Certificate Capstone Course requirements are fulfilled through the following options: scholarly writing, a professional presentation, a creative project, and/or creating a new product exemplifying your newly developed skills in creativity, innovation, and leadership.

Arts-Based Inquiry

When a form of inquiry is conceptualized and actualized in terms of creative processes in pursuit of human knowing, using as its primary means an art medium, it may be termed art-based inquiry. This course examines select forms of thinking about, and doing, art-based inquiry, inclusive of its relevance to research processes and forms of scientific inquiry. Although preference is given to the visual arts, any art form may be pursued.

University Learning Experience

Our Creativity Studies Certificate is a 100% online program. While the core of this program is completed asynchronously, there are some synchronous, online features designed to deepen your educational experience. We call this a Virtual Learning Experience (VLE). In addition to the VLE, you will begin your studies with a virtual Welcome Week. Welcome Week activities, including a program orientation, are held online during the week before the start of Fall and Spring semesters. The in-person Community Learning Experience (CLE) is also available for you to explore. The CLE is held in California in odd-numbered years. It is optional and not required to complete the program.
